Telegram is available as a native Windows app, so you don’t need an emulator to run it on your PC. Download it directly from telegram.org or the Microsoft Store, install it, and you’re done. It works on Windows 10 and Windows 11 without any workarounds.
What is Telegram?
Telegram is a cloud-based messaging app launched in 2013 by Pavel Durov. It competes with WhatsApp and Signal, but takes a different approach: it prioritizes speed, large group sizes, and file sharing over end-to-end encryption by default. Messages sync across all your devices instantly because everything lives in Telegram’s cloud. You can start a conversation on your phone and pick it up on your PC without any delay.
It supports groups with up to 200,000 members, file sharing up to 2GB per file, channels for broadcasting to unlimited subscribers, and bots for automation. Free to use, no ads in personal chats.
Can you use Telegram on PC?
Yes, and Telegram has one of the better desktop experiences of any messaging app. There’s a native Windows client that works on its own. You don’t need your phone on or connected. Log in with your phone number, and all your chats, groups, and files are right there.
The PC app has all the same features as mobile: voice and video calls, file transfers, bots, channels, and stories. The interface is clean and fast.

Common issues and fixes
Telegram won’t open on Windows
Right-click the Telegram icon and select “Run as administrator.” If it still won’t open, check whether your antivirus is blocking it. Some antivirus tools flag Telegram’s updater process. Add Telegram to your exceptions list. If that doesn’t work, uninstall it and reinstall the latest version from telegram.org.
Messages not syncing from phone to PC
This usually means you’re not connected to the internet, or Telegram’s servers are having a temporary issue. Check your connection, close the desktop app, and reopen it. If it keeps happening, go to Settings > Privacy and Security and check whether any device session restrictions are active.
Notifications not working on PC
Go to Windows Settings > System > Notifications and confirm Telegram is allowed. Inside Telegram, check Settings > Notifications and Sounds as well. Both need to be enabled for desktop notifications to work.
Can’t send large files
Telegram’s limit is 2GB per file for regular accounts. If your file is over that, compress or split it first. If it’s under 2GB and still failing, the issue is probably your upload speed. Large file uploads need a stable connection.
Alternatives to Telegram for PC
WhatsApp Desktop Popular but requires your phone to be connected and online at all times. Signal Desktop Stronger encryption focus, though it has smaller group limits and no channels. Discord Good for communities, voice channels, and server-based organization. Slack Team messaging with integrations, built for work environments. Microsoft Teams Comes built into Windows 11, works well for Office 365 users.
FAQ
Does Telegram Desktop require my phone to be on?
No. Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram’s desktop app works on its own. Once you log in, you can use it even if your phone is off or out of battery. Your account is linked to your phone number, not any specific device.
Is Telegram free on PC?
Yes, Telegram is free. There’s a paid plan called Telegram Premium that adds things like 4GB file uploads, faster downloads, and exclusive stickers. The core app is free with no ads in personal chats.
Can I use Telegram on multiple PCs?
Yes. Telegram lets you stay logged in on multiple devices at once. All your chats sync. Go to Settings > Devices to see active sessions and log out of any you don’t recognize.
Is Telegram secure?
Regular chats use client-server encryption, not end-to-end. That means Telegram’s servers can technically read them. For fully private conversations, use Secret Chats instead. Those are end-to-end encrypted and don’t get stored on Telegram’s servers. If privacy is your main concern, Signal is the more private option by default.
Can I use Telegram without a phone number?
You need a phone number to register. Once your account is set up, you can run the desktop app without your phone nearby. Telegram has also added the option to use an anonymous username so contacts don’t see your phone number.
How do I transfer files from PC to phone using Telegram?
Send the file to your “Saved Messages” chat. It works like a personal cloud folder. Open Saved Messages on your phone and download the file from there. It’s probably the fastest way to move files between your devices without any extra software.
