Microsoft switched Windows 11 users to the New Outlook app without much warning. If you want Classic Outlook back, you can get it. This guide covers three working methods, from the easiest toggle fix to a clean reinstall.
Classic Outlook vs New Outlook: What Actually Changed
Here is what most users care about when comparing the two versions:
| Feature | Classic Outlook | New Outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Offline email access | Full access, works without internet | Limited, primarily online |
| COM add-ins | Supported fully | Not supported, web add-ins only |
| PST file support | Full local PST file support | No direct PST support |
| Calendar view | Rich, customizable desktop calendar | Simpler, web-style calendar |
| Performance | Faster for large mailboxes | Can lag with large data sets |
Method 1: Revert Using the Toggle Switch (Easiest)
Many users do not know this option exists. The New Outlook app includes a toggle that switches you back instantly.
- Open the New Outlook app.
- Look for a toggle labeled New Outlook in the top-right corner of the window.
- Click the toggle to turn it off.
- Confirm when prompted.
- Classic Outlook will launch automatically.
If the toggle is missing, your version of New Outlook may not include it. Use Method 2 instead.
Method 2: Download Classic Outlook Standalone
If Classic Outlook is not installed on your PC, you can get it from Microsoft directly. This works for users who never had Office installed, or whose Classic Outlook was removed.
- Open your browser and go to portal.office.com.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Look for the Install apps button (top right).
- Select Other install options.
- Choose the classic desktop version of Office.
- Run the installer and wait for it to complete.
- Open Classic Outlook from your Start Menu.
Note: This method requires a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time Office license.
Method 3: Install via Microsoft 365 Subscription
If you have an active Microsoft 365 subscription, installing Classic Outlook is straightforward.
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Find your Microsoft 365 subscription and click Manage.
- Select Install Office.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Classic Outlook installs as part of the full Office suite.
Will Classic Outlook Still Work in 2026?
Yes. Microsoft continues to support Classic Outlook with security updates. While the company promotes New Outlook, it has not announced a deprecation date for the classic version. You can use it throughout 2026 without issues. Business users with COM add-ins or PST files especially benefit from staying on Classic.
Common Issues After Switching Back
Add-ins Not Loading
Check if your add-ins are compatible with your version of Classic Outlook. Reinstalling the add-in often fixes loading problems. Try running Outlook as Administrator once to resolve any permission blocks.
PST File Import Not Working
Go to File, then Open and Export, then Import/Export. Select Import from another program or file and choose your PST file. If the file is corrupted, use the built-in repair tool: search for scanpst.exe on your PC and run it on the PST file first.
Profile Setup Issues
Open Control Panel and search for Mail. Click Show Profiles, then Add to create a new profile. Set it as the default. This clears old, conflicting profile data that can prevent Outlook from starting correctly.
